Scholarships

Below are a few of the scholarships available to members of the Phantom Regiment. If we are missing any, please let us know. Some of these are funded with endowments, while others are funded by donations to the scholarship fund.

Phantom Regiment members and families are strongly encouraged to read about the following opportunities, especially those that come from the Regiment phamily.

Diane Thompson-Wells Memorial Scholarship

Diane Thompson-Wells was a long time supporter of the Phantom Regiment, as well as a member off its Board of Directors. Her services to the Board included Treasurer and Board President (1997). She was very passionate for the organization and its students. Diane passed away in 2000. A scholarship was created in her name to help support the educational goals of the Regiment’s members.

This scholarship is funded by an endowment and current members of the Phantom Regiment are elligible to apply.

Nichole Ely Memorial Scholarship Fund

Nichole "Nikki" Ely marched in Phantom Regiment's color guard from 1988-95. The Pekin, Ill., native earned a spot in the color guard as a 14-year-old and eventually would become the guard's C.O. A scholarship fund was started in 2007 to keep Nikki’s memory alive as drum corps and the Phantom Regiment meant so much to her.

This scholarship is funded by donations from the public. Current members of the Phantom Regiment color guard are elligible to apply.

Jim Ott Scholarship

The Jim Ott Scholarship is a national scholarship offered by SOME to members of the Drum & Bugle Corps activity. It is in the amount of $3,000 and is named after Jim Ott who was a nationally known brass arranger for several different Drum & Bugle Corps including the Stockton Commodores, Concord Blue Devils, and Spirit of Atlanta. It is presented each year at the Drum Corps International Championships.

Friends of DCI Scholarship

Approximately 70 percent of more than 5,000 drum corps participants are full-time students at higher educational institutions, and in a world with increasing tuition and text book costs, members of the Friends of DCI program understand the financial challenges these corps members face. Last year, $6,000 in academic scholarships raised by generous contributions from Friends of DCI members, was awarded to students who excel both on and off the field.

This summer, the Friends of DCI will award up to three academic scholarships of $2,000 each to corps members participating in the 2009 Drum Corps International Tour.

High school seniors or college students enrolled for courses in the fall of 2009 who are current members in good standing of an Open or World Class corps competing in the 2009 Drum Corps International Tour may apply. The application deadline is Friday, May 1, 2009, and recipients will be recognized this August at the 2009 DCI World Championships in Indianapolis.
