Wednesday, July 7 (Letters from Lea - 2010)
Happy rehearsal day from Frostburg, MD! We stayed at the college here in the dorms today...this is my fourth year rehearsing here - generally we stay for three days, but this year we were only here for one. The corps second drum major camp was already underway when we arrived. We had sectionals this morning - Mason worked with the trumpet section on our feature for a while and all the other sections worked on their difficult spots with their techs. The food truck was parked a pretty good distance from the field (off campus). We hiked the long trek to get food and ate with the drum majors who were here with the Phantom Regiment drum major camp.
In visual, we spent an hour showing the drum majors how to march and they had the chance to march our drill spots (under our instruction). They then proceeded to watch us battle our way through basics and "Jack" with Jay. We won a point for the first time in a week. It was also double or nothing from yesterday and the drum majors gave us a point: Jay-4, hornline-3. We are closing the gap! After basics, we chunked set by set through "The Awakening" and the beginning "The Journey Forward." The purpose was to get more of the new tubas in the drill. Ben Chambers, a trumpet who has marched here since 2007, came in to fill a trumpet hole today. He was also getting in the drill and learned a HUGE chunk of the show. Kudos to him!
After supper the drum majors watched our music warm-up. One of the drum majors also had the chance to conduct the hornline through "Elsa's Procession to the Cathedral." We spent an hour going through "The Conflict" in music ensemble, and then went into full ensemble from 8-10PM. It was a surprisingly pleasant, focused block and went by in a flash! We had quite the crowd in the stands for our run-through at the end of the evening. Currently we are pulling out of Frostburg and are on our way back to PA. Should be a short drive! Thank goodness!
Breakfast: pancakes, cereal, yogurt Lunch: hamburgers, peaches, veggies, ice cream Supper: Alfredo, green beans, cookies Snack: Macaroni and cheese, Oreos, milk
Moment of the Day: Drew Solmonson, one of our visual techs, is deeply offended every day I wear my Minnesota Twins hat. He came up to me today in visual and taped over the symbol. He then proceeded to tell me he would yet make a White Sox fan out of me. Oh brother! Drew, you know youll always be my favorite!
Cant wait for a show day tomorrow...talk to you soon.
