Wednesday, June 4 (Mike's Memoirs - 2003)
This was the 13th day of Phantom Regiment training camp! Training camp is also known as "Everydays" in some corps.
Before tour begins we basically practice all day long in 3 blocks. We wake up at good old 8 a.m. and have an hour to eat, shower or do anything else in order to be ready and on the field at 9 a.m.
The first block is usually 4 hours of music rehearsal for the hornline. J.D. Shaw, our arranger and brass caption head leads us in breathing and music exercises. Then we usually track a bit, which is setting up a block and practicing music as we march.
Lunch is another hour, which, if you ask me, seems like 20 minutes. The next block would be "visual" where we do basics and learn and clean drill.
Today the hornline did circle drill which everyone just loves. (That was sarcastic.) We then proceeded to learn the last 10 sets of the show.
After dinner we had the last block which was "ensemble." Ensemble rehearsal is when the entire corps (brass, percussion, guard) rehearses together. Music and visual aspects of the show are attacked at the same time. Ensemble is usually capped off with a run through of what we know.
Today was the first full run-through! I'll be keeping track of how many run-throughs we do this summer.
Everyone is really excited about the show. I personally feel that this could be the best show we have had in many years. Each section of the
corps has taken a big step forward and our show seems to be extremely effective.
My suggestion is, find out Phantom Regiment's tour schedule and get there!
